At least four Britons are believed to be among those who died attempting to flee a fast-moving wildfire in the heatwave-struck Almería region in south-east Spain, as the country endures its second heatwave of the summer. Subscribe to Guardian News on YouTube ► youtube.com
The regional government of Andalucía said the victims died while trying to escape the flames near the village of Bédar in the Los Gallardos municipality of Almería. “There are no words for such pain and I want to offer our condolences to the families of the dead,” Antonio Sanz, the region’s emergency minister, said on Friday morning. He added that emergency services were fighting a “terrible and very complex fire, which is spreading very fast”. By Friday morning, 150 firefighters were tackling the blaze and another 150 members of Spain’s military emergencies unit were being deployed to help. Spain has experienced increasingly frequent and prolonged heatwaves in recent years, with temperatures often exceeding 40C (104F), creating conditions for major wildfires. #spain #extremeheat #wildfires #almeria #andalucia #spainwildfire
