Lebanon seeks Israeli withdrawal as Rome talks raise hopes but leave key issues unresolved

Lebanon and Israel have held a sixth round of US-mediated talks in Rome, focused on Israel's withdrawal from so-called "pilot zones" in southern Lebanon. While both sides describe the discussions as positive, disputes remain over verification procedures and Israel's demand for direct involvement in confirming the Lebanese army has cleared areas of Hezbollah fighters and weapons. Many in Lebanon, particularly within the Shia community, fear the agreement could take up to two years to implement or may never materialise, as Israeli military activity, including shelling and arson in southern villages, continues despite the talks.
