Italy’s court has sentenced Giovanni Castellucci, the former chief executive of Autostrade, to 12 years in prison over his role in the 2018 collapse of the Morandi Bridge in Genoa that killed 43. The court ruled that poor maintenance contributed to one of Italy’s deadliest infrastructure disasters and convicted Castellucci of negligence and vehicle homicide. Families of the victims welcomed the guilty verdicts, saying the verdict acknowledged individual responsibility. But they also criticised the lengthy probe that led to some charges expiring and several defendants being acquitted. The Morandi Bridge collapse has come to symbolise the consequences of neglected infrastructure and public safety. Al Jazeera's Camille Nedelec reports Subscribe to our channel: bit.ly
