Trump delays new US-Canada bridge opening amid growing trade dispute

21/07/2026-22:08 21/07/2026-22:25 חדשות قناة Al Jazeera דיווח

The planned opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge between Detroit and Windsor has become another flashpoint in the growing trade dispute between the United States and Canada. The $4.5bn crossing, built to strengthen one of the world’s biggest trading relationships, has been delayed by US President Donald Trump. The bridge was designed to ease pressure on the century-old Ambassador Bridge, which handles a major share of North American land trade. Canadian officials and business leaders warn that tariffs and trade tensions are damaging deeply integrated supply chains, especially in the auto industry. The dispute comes as Trump questions the benefits of decades of economic integration with Canada. Despite the tensions, billions of dollars in goods continue to cross the border every day between the two allies. Al Jazeera’s Ian Wood reports from Windsor, Canada. Subscribe to our channel: bit.ly
