Thousands protest in Tunisia as opposition challenges President Saied

Thousands of people have gathered in Tunisia's capital, Tunis, to protest against President Kais Saied, five years after he assumed emergency powers that reshaped the country's political system. Demonstrators criticised the country's economic conditions and called for democratic reforms, accusing the government of concentrating power in the presidency. Since 2021, Saied has introduced a new constitution, ruled by decree and significantly reduced the powers of parliament.
