A shopping centre has partially collapsed in a 7.1 magnitude earthquake in south-western Japan leaving people trapped inside, according to emergency services. The Japan Meteorological Agency said the earthquake had a depth of 10km (6.2 miles) and hit the country’s Kumamoto prefecture at 4.27pm local time, measuring at the highest possible level seven on Japan’s Shindo seismic scale of shaking intensity.
