South Korea's Kospi swings wildly amid AI boom and government intervention

07/08/2026-07:10 07/08/2026-07:20 חדשות قناة Al Jazeera דיווח

South Korea's Kospi index has swung wildly this year, more than doubling to pass 9,000 points before crashing 40 percent, triggering automatic trading suspensions over 50 times. Analysts point to a combination of government intervention, deregulation of exchange-traded funds and heavy reliance on AI chipmakers Samsung and SK Hynix, which now account for over half the market. Small investors, including teenagers borrowing to buy shares, say they are bearing the brunt of the volatility, fuelling public anger and calls for the government to step back.
