Wildfires are tearing through the western United States and Canada, forcing tens of thousands to evacuate as toxic smoke spreads across the continent. In Spokane, Washington, resident Brian Davis lost his family home of 18 years, along with cherished belongings and two pets, in what officials describe as the worst destruction on record for the region. Similar blazes have prompted mass evacuations from California’s Big Sur, with firefighters warning the wildfire season, which runs until November, is only halfway through.
