Lebanon Ends Death Penalty and Approves First General Amnesty in 30 Years

12/08/2026-23:10 12/08/2026-23:25 חדשות قناة Al Jazeera דיווח

ebanon’s parliament has approved a general amnesty for the first time since the post–civil war era, a move that could affect thousands of prisoners and people on wanted lists. The law comes as the country’s jails hold more than 6,000 inmates in facilities operating at around triple capacity, with many never having seen a judge. MPs also abolished the death penalty, ending capital punishment in law as well as practice. But sectarian compromises mean debates over justice and accountability will continue.
