Tens of thousands of people gathered in Trafalgar Square to pay tribute to the late University of Cambridge professor Jason Arday. Stand Up to Racism, which organised the event, estimated that 30,000 had gathered to listen to speeches about Arday’s life and legacy from academics, MPs, friends and campaigners, and to join in a minute’s silence. Arday, 41, was pronounced dead after emergency services were called to his home in south London on Friday. He had just resigned from his Cambridge role after intense and widespread scrutiny over accusations of plagiarism, which he rejected, and inconsistencies in statements about his career and achievements.
