Deepfakes are becoming harder to detect as AI scams and fake images spread: Analysis

24/08/2026-03:42 24/08/2026-04:00 חדשות قناة Al Jazeera דיווח

From fake celebrity endorsements to political disinformation and the rise of nudification apps, deep fakes are becoming increasingly common and harder to detect. In an interview with Al Jazeera, Sam Gregory, executive director of Witness and an expert on AI and synthetic media, warned that deep fakes are an "escalating problem" across three areas: consumer scams combining falsified voices and videos with celebrity likenesses; nudification apps creating fake *ual images; and political and conflict deep fakes that create "ambient uncertainty" about what is real. Gregory said detection is becoming increasingly difficult, with research showing people essentially fail to distinguish real from fake—"a coin toss" for audio and only one in five correctly identifying video deep fakes. He said the solution is not for individuals to stop sharing content online but to demand stronger enforcement, red lines, and new detection techniques from platforms. He noted that Meta allows nudification apps on platforms like Instagram, and that Elon Musk's platform Grok was used to generate over a million fake intimate images of women in just a few weeks.
