Qatar PM heads to Tehran amid efforts to reopen Iran-US talks

27/08/2026-06:45 27/08/2026-07:20 חדשות قناة Al Jazeera דיווח

Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani is travelling to Tehran for talks aimed at easing regional tensions and opening a path to dialogue between Iran and the United States. The visit follows a busy week of diplomatic efforts involving Pakistan and Oman, with Qatar seeking to build on those contacts. The discussions are expected to address freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and efforts to restore the waterway to its pre-February 28 status. Oman and Iran have reportedly agreed on a framework for a temporary shipping route through the Strait, as well as efforts to clear mines from the waterway. Qatar hopes the discussions can eventually help restart negotiations between Tehran and Washington after months of military confrontation. But Iran stresses that its current discussions are only with mediators and should not be seen as a resumption of direct negotiations with the US. With both sides still holding different positions, there are no expectations of an immediate breakthrough. Still, the diplomatic contacts represent an important channel for dialogue after months of confrontation. Al Jazeera’s Sinem Koseoglu reports from Tehran. Subscribe to our channel: bit.ly
