How voting actually works across the US ahead of the midterms

Most voting in the US midterm elections will take place on November 3, with the outcome determining which party controls Congress and much of President Donald Trump's agenda for his final two years in office. Patty Culhane explains how the process actually works. The US constitution gives states the power to run federal elections, so every state sets its own rules. In Virginia, South Dakota and Minnesota, voters can already cast early ballots in person. In California and Ohio, early voting cannot start until 29 days before the election, while Alabama, Mississippi and New Hampshire only allow voting in person on election day itself. States also differ on mail and absentee voting, which lets people who cannot get to the polls, including disabled voters and deployed service members, request, complete and mail in a ballot.
