Imran Khan's PTI party calls off Islamabad protest, plans new march

The party of Pakistan's former prime minister, Imran Khan, has called off protests planned for this weekend in Islamabad demanding his release from prison, where he has been held since 2023. Instead, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf says it will march from Peshawar to Islamabad on October 5. Police had been preparing to block the weekend protests, sealing roads into the capital with shipping containers at every entry and exit point, including routes from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. PTI says its right to protest is enshrined in Pakistan's constitution and insists it will keep pushing for the release of Khan, whom it considers a political prisoner.
