Hundreds of people, many of them university students, rallied in Bogota despite the rain, opposing Colombia's new right-wing government's policy towards Israel. It was the third anniversary of the Hamas attack that triggered Israel's genocide in Gaza, which has killed more than 70,000 Palestinians. Protesters waved Palestinian flags and scarves and called for a free Palestine. The rally began in front of the new Israeli embassy in Bogota. President Abelardo de la Espriella has restored diplomatic and commercial relations with Israel and plans to open a Colombian embassy in Jerusalem in two weeks. Despite the relatively low turnout, there was a big presence of security forces, including anti-riot police. De la Espriella is also announcing new protest rules that would allow police to intervene with force when they feel threatened or public property is at risk.
