US sanctions International Criminal Court in major escalation against institution

The United States has imposed sweeping sanctions on the International Criminal Court (ICC), marking a major escalation in the Trump administration's campaign against the institution. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the measures, saying Washington would ban transactions with the court to cut off its resources and cripple its ability to operate. The US argues that the ICC has no jurisdiction over American citizens because Washington never joined the court. Unlike previous sanctions targeting individual judges and prosecutors, the latest measures target the institution itself, potentially affecting its finances, contractors and investigations. The sanctions come amid Washington's opposition to ICC investigations involving American and Israeli officials, including the court's arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The ICC has rejected the sanctions, warning that they undermine justice and vowing to continue its work. The announcement also coincides with former ICC judge Navi Pillay receiving the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize. Al Jazeera's Manuel Rapalo reports from Washington, while Step Vaessen reports from The Hague on the court's response and the potential impact on its operations. Subscribe to our channel: bit.ly
