Amazon's future at stake as Brazil heads into decisive run-off vote

In Brazil's northern state of Amapa, indigenous leaders weigh the promise and peril of offshore oil ahead of the October 25th presidential run-off. State-controlled Petrobras says it has found oil offshore, bringing hope of development alongside fears for the environment. Tribal leaders have gathered deep in the Amazon, thousands of kilometres from the capital Brasilia, as they consider what the vote could mean for their land and their children. Officials say they have the technology to capture oil if it spills, but residents warn the sea's strong currents could spread any spill and affect the region's rivers. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva faces Senator Flavio Bolsonaro. The latter has advocated opening protected lands to mining and farming, and promises to end illegal deforestation while making forest-clearing permits easier to obtain. Under Lula, Amazon deforestation has fallen, and he has demarcated many indigenous lands, which residents say has made them feel safer. Monica Yanakiew reports from Amapa, Brazil, for Al Jazeera.
