Flávio Bolsonaro has fled to the US and declared himself the “true president” of Brazil after losing Sunday’s presidential election to the leftwing incumbent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Subscribe to Guardian News on YouTube ► youtube.com
The far-right senator, who is under investigation in at least two criminal cases, was filmed landing in Miami, Florida, on Wednesday after having missed a Tuesday-morning deadline to surrender his passport. His opponent Lula said: “This is what the family Bolsonaro are like. Brazil is their second homeland. Their first homeland is licking the boots of the US.” Lawmakers from Lula’s Workers’ party asked the supreme court to order Bolsonaro’s arrest and requested that his name be put on Interpol’s red notices list. A US state department spokesperson said Bolsonaro and his family would be granted visas “to allow them entry into the United States”. But fleeing Brazil for the US has almost become standard practice among Bolsonaro family members, says South America correspondent Tiago Rogero. #brazil #brazilelection #politics #lula #flaviobolsonaro #jairbolsonaro #trump
