Activists enter Microsoft data centre construction site in Amsterdam in protest

Activists have entered a construction site in Amsterdam where Microsoft is building a data centre of three towers, each 86 metres high. It is said to use as much electricity as most Amsterdam households, one reason for the anger. Police forbade journalists from going inside. Activist Sam van der Beek says Amsterdam has enough data centres and Microsoft is “taking our land and resources” to invest its money. At a Global Switch data centre, servers store everything from medical records to cat videos. Al Jazeera’s reporter says data storage and artificial intelligence use more power than the Netherlands can provide because the grid is overloaded. Stijn Grove of the Dutch Data Centre Association says there is a good debate, but the industry decided to join the race and must find the best way to do it. Al Jazeera’s Step Vaessen reports from Amsterdam. Subscribe to our channel: bit.ly
