Three years after a catastrophic train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio, the village is using a $22m settlement from Norfolk Southern Railway to revamp its old freight depot and fund local projects. The 2023 disaster saw 38 cars derail and catch fire after a wheel bearing overheated, with 11 carrying hazardous materials. Whilst the company has completed remediation efforts and paid over $900m in total settlements and cleanup costs, residents report ongoing health issues including tumours and tremors. A long-term study is examining the effects of exposure to multiple toxic chemicals, as the community hopes their experience will prevent future disasters.
