Iran succession debate: Analysts say Iran’s system can withstand leadership crisis

05/03/2026-17:06 05/03/2026-17:25 חדשות قناة Al Jazeera דיווח

Iran is navigating a critical transition period following the death of its supreme leader, whose funeral has been delayed amid ongoing deliberations over succession. The process is unfolding against a backdrop of continued US airstrikes and regional tensions. Joining the discussion were Hassan Ahmadian, an Associate Professor at the University of Tehran, and Abdullah Al Arian, an Associate Professor of History at Georgetown University in Qatar. Professor Ahmadian stated there is no concern about a power vacuum in Iran, explaining that leadership councils have been functioning and the constitutional succession process is underway. He suggested the funeral delay might be linked to announcing the next leader. He also dismissed the idea that Iranian attacks on Gulf states are aimed at pressuring the US through them, asserting that Iran is primarily targeting US and Israeli bases directly. Professor Al Arian argued that the US strategy of seeking regime change through airstrikes reflects a profound ignorance of the Iranian state's structure. He noted that unlike the regimes in Libya or Iraq, Iran's system has internal stability and contingencies that prevent collapse, placing the US in a difficult position. He also highlighted that threats from Israel to target the next supreme leader complicate the timing of any succession announcement. Subscribe to our channel: bit.ly
