Australians, many of Iranian descent, tried to stop a bus carrying Iran’s women’s football team to the airport amid concern for their safety if they returned home. The players were labelled wartime traitors after declining to salute the flag or sing the national anthem during a match, prompting fears of reprisals. Five have been granted asylum in Australia, while most chose to leave; US President Donald Trump called to convey concern for their welfare. Al Jazeera’s Lucia Newman reports.
