Shelter capacity in Lebanon overstretched, UN humanitarian chief says

Tom Fletcher, the UN's humanitarian affairs coordinator, told the Security Council that Lebanon's humanitarian crisis is worsening with "alarming speed" due to the regional war. He reported more than 570 people killed and over 1,400 injured since March 2, while around 750,000 have been displaced within Lebanon and nearly 100,000 have crossed into Syria. Over 120,000 people are now in overcrowded shelters with inadequate sanitation and limited supplies, raising risks of disease, *ual violence and exploitation. Schools have closed to house displaced families, disrupting education for thousands of children. Dozens of health facilities have shut down, and the World Health Organization has recorded 25 attacks on healthcare since February 28, resulting in 16 deaths and 29 injuries. The UN and partners have delivered food, water, fuel and medical services but face growing access challenges as active fighting, debris and unexploded ordnance block roads. Fletcher warned regional instability and disrupted shipping routes are worsening food and supply costs globally, with aid deliveries delayed by up to six months. The UN is scaling up with a $15 million emergency allocation, but Fletcher urged the Security Council to protect civilians, increase humanitarian funding, and revive "strategic, calm, rational, hopeful diplomacy" to end the violence.
