Iranian president confirms Basij chief Soleimani killed in Israeli strike, Larijani fate unclear

The Iranian president has confirmed the killing of Gholamreza Soleimani, commander of the Basij internal security force, in an Israeli strike. However, there is still no confirmation from Tehran on Israel's claim to have killed Iran's top security official, Ali Larijani, secretary of the Supreme National Security Council. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the killings are aimed at paving the way for regime change, giving the Iranian people "an opportunity to take their fate into their own hands." US President Donald Trump welcomed the strikes, claiming Iran's leadership has been "decapitated." In an exclusive interview with Al Jazeera, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stressed that Iran's system is built on institutions and that the loss of leaders, including the late Supreme Leader, has not shaken it.
