The United States has redeployed artillery and anti-missile systems from South Korea to the Middle East without Seoul's approval, straining the decades-old alliance. President Donald Trump is also pressing South Korea and Japan to send warships to the Strait of Hormuz, a request Seoul's ruling party says may violate domestic law. The mounting demands are fuelling debate in South Korea over the alliance's value and reviving calls for the country to acquire its own nuclear weapons, whilst concern grows over being drawn into conflicts with China and the Middle East.
