Iran sends mixed signals as US pushes diplomacy with military pressure

25/03/2026-23:44 26/03/2026-00:00 חדשות قناة Al Jazeera דיווח

Iranian officials are sending mixed signals over potential talks with the US. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi used harsh rhetoric against Washington but left the door open for dialogue, suggesting Iran is studying a US proposal while offering its own points. Al Jazeera's Ali Hashem reported from Tehran that despite public denials, messages are being conveyed through friendly countries, with negotiations still "on the table." Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf warned against any US attempt to seize an Iranian island, hinting at possible targets such as Kharg Island—where 90% of Iran's oil is exported—or the disputed islands of Greater Tunb, Lesser Tunb and Abu Musa. In Washington, Al Jazeera's John Hendren said President Trump is under domestic pressure from rising oil prices and is using both diplomatic "carrots" and military "sticks"—including 7,000 troops from marine expeditionary units and the 82nd Airborne—to push for a deal. While the US has the capability to seize territory, holding it under Iranian fire would risk the protracted conflict Trump has long opposed. Subscribe to our channel: bit.ly
