Gas storage facilities across Europe are significantly emptier than usual following a harsh winter, with levels at just 28 percent compared to 58 percent two years ago. Companies due to begin refilling depots on 1 April are hesitating because gas prices have soared since the war on Iran started last month. The Netherlands' storage stands at only 5 percent, while Germany's is at 22 percent. The European Commission is urging citizens to conserve energy, warning that prolonged conflict involving the US, Israel and Iran could lead to serious shortages if storage capacity is not increased soon.
