America divided: US war on Iran and public opinion | This is America

07/04/2026-23:51 08/04/2026-00:00 חדשות قناة Al Jazeera דיווח

In this episode of This is America, hosted by Anna Burns‑Francis, Al Jazeera looks at how President Trump’s threat that a whole “civilisation will die in Iran” clashes with a country increasingly uneasy about his war. From the White House to the streets of Washington, the programme shows how the conflict has split America not just between Republicans and Democrats, but also inside the Republican Party itself, between loyal MAGA supporters and conservatives worried about the cost, the language and the lack of a clear endgame. Al Jazeera’s White House correspondent Kimberly Halkett reports on the political backlash to Trump’s threats to take Iran “back to the Stone Age”. Senate Democrats denounce his words as “sick”, while Republicans back a president they say is finally “defending Americans”, even as diplomacy with Tehran stalls. In Washington, Richard Gaisford talks to students, families and voters. Some fear for civilians, question billions spent on the war and feel the impact of soaring fuel prices and living costs. Others argue Iran’s regime “had to be stopped” and see the war as a price worth paying for security. Back in the studio, Phil Lavelle looks at new polling that shows most Americans want the war to end even if US goals in Iran are not fully met. The data reveals deep partisan and generational divides and strong opposition to any ground invasion. With Trump’s approval ratings slipping, petrol prices rising and social media full of graphic images from the battlefield, This is America asks whether public opinion, economic anger and memories of past wars can rein in a president who seems ready to escalate, and what that could mean for the midterm elections and for US democracy. Democratic strategist James Butler and Republican pollster Whit Ayres join us in studio to explain why support for the US war on Iran so closely tracks attitudes toward Donald Trump, how partisan and generational divides are reshaping the court of public opinion, and whether rising gas prices and a sense that this is a “war of choice” could turn the conflict into political suicide for the president in the midterms.
