Trump’s hand was forced to accept a ceasefire deal with Iran because he “does not have any good options” on the table, a foreign policy expert on Iran has said. In an interview with Al Jazeera, Trita Parsi of the Quincy Institute said a wider US-Israeli war with Iran would “destroy the Trump presidency”. “He was talking a big game about escalatory steps, but everyone in the region knew that if you go after Iran’s energy resources and power plants, the Iranians would retaliate against GCC states, and we would have a much, much worse energy crisis than we have now,” Parsi said. “He needed to get out of this. He made his threats earlier today to give the appearance that an agreement he would come to by this evening was done on his terms,” Parsi noted. “But when you actually look at it, it appears that it wasn’t. Even his own statement said that the negotiations will be based on the 10-point plan of the Iranians, which is a much more reasonable plan.” Meanwhile, Al Jazeera’s Osama bin Javaid joins live from the studios.
