Argentina protesters rally against glacier law weakening water protections

09/04/2026-16:48 09/04/2026-16:55 חדשות قناة Al Jazeera דיווח

Protesters have gathered outside Argentina's Congress as lawmakers prepare to vote on controversial changes to a 2010 law that currently bans economic activity in glacier and periglacier areas. President Javier Milei is pushing for revisions to permit mining of copper, lithium and other minerals in previously protected zones, with provincial governments empowered to decide which periglacier areas remain safeguarded. Environmentalists warn that exploiting these areas, which supply water to seven million people, threatens the entire glacial system at a time when Argentina's glaciers are already shrinking due to global warming. Mining companies support the law, citing potential investment, whilst critics argue the changes prioritise economic development over environmental protection.
