At just 18 years old, while most people around her are expected to follow a more conventional path after school, Emma Maertens chooses a different direction. After years of dreaming about life on the road, she decides to buy a bus and begin building an off-grid home on wheels of her own. What begins as inspiration from van life creators quickly turns into something far more ambitious: not just traveling, but designing a fully self-sufficient space that reflects her lifestyle, her independence, and her passion for cooking and creating. Instead of a compact van, she sets her sights on a Toyota Coaster bus, large enough to house a real kitchen, a proper living area, and the systems required to live off-grid for extended periods. But the reality of that decision is immediate and unforgiving. The bus she buys is an empty, aging shell that needs to be stripped, repaired, and rebuilt from the ground up. With no formal training and only what she has learned through years of watching others build online, Emma begins the process anyway. She will face decades of bad fittings, rust, and systems she has never worked with before. Supported by her father’s engineering mindset but driven by her own vision, she will push through uncertainty, learning as she goes, turning trial and error into progress. As the build evolves, so does the idea behind it: from a dream inspired by others into a fully realized, off-grid tiny home capable of crossing Australia. Emma Maertens Youtube: youtube.com
