The ‘Gaza playbook’: what are Israel’s plans for Lebanon?

“I came outside the road and I saw the smoke. They were bombing all over Lebanon,” said Ghia Hajo, a Lebanese woman who, together with her family, was displaced from their home near the city of Tyre on 2 March. Subscribe to Guardian News on YouTube ► youtube.com
After fighting erupted once again between Hezbollah and Israel after the killing of Iran’s supreme leader, Israel’s military launched a bombing campaign and ground invasion of southern Lebanon, displacing more than 1.2 million people and, according to Lebanon’s health ministry, more than 2,000 have been killed so far. ‌ Israel has said that it will occupy vast swathes of south Lebanon, establishing a “security zone” in the area up to the Litani River, adding that displaced people would not be allowed to return to their homes until the safety of northern Israeli cities is guaranteed, prompting concern there will be long-term displacement. ‌ Rights groups, however, have said these mass remote detonations could amount to wanton destruction: a war crime. The laws of war prohibit the deliberate destruction of civilian homes, except when necessary for lawful military reasons. ‌ The Israel Defense Forces has said it is targeting Hezbollah infrastructure such as tunnels and military facilities, which it claims the armed group has embedded in civilian homes, through these demolitions. ‌ The Guardian journalist Will Christou asks what the future may look like for Lebanon, as fears grow Israel could replicate a campaign similar to its operation in Gaza, and for people like Hajo who are unsure of when they can return to their homes. ‌ The Guardian publishes independent journalism, made possible by supporters.
