Northeastern Nigeria is facing a surge in suicide bombings after months of relative calm, raising fears that armed groups such as Boko Haram are shifting tactics once again. Attacks have targeted markets, checkpoints and highways, reviving memories of the conflict's darkest period between 2013 and 2017. Civilians and security personnel alike are on edge as the government, which has been battling the insurgency for 16 years, pledges renewed operations against the armed groups.
