Mental health crisis grows in northeast Nigeria after years of insurgency

27/04/2026-13:55 27/04/2026-14:10 חדשות قناة Al Jazeera דיווח

Millions in northeastern Nigeria are grappling with the psychological impact of 16 years of conflict with Boko Haram. Former captives, children raised in displacement camps, and even healthcare workers face untreated trauma, anxiety and depression. In Borno State, home to nearly seven million people, only 18 psychiatrists are available to treat survivors. Doctors warn that without proper mental health support, the invisible wounds of war could outlast the conflict itself and affect future generations.
