I was at the White House correspondents' dinner shooting - this is how it unfolded

It soon emerged that suspected gunman Cole Tomas Allen had been arrested. He was allegedly armed with knives, a shotgun and a handgun. Sitting at his table inside the room as the events unfolded was the Guardian’s Washington DC bureau chief, David Smith. He describes the panic in the room when the shots were fired. Investigators are now looking into anti-Trump sentiment as a motive for the attack. The shooting has also prompted questions over security, with some asking how a shooter was able to get close to where Trump and many other senior administration officials were gathered.
