UN Pressure Mounts Over Strait of Hormuz Crisis

A draft UN Security Council resolution sponsored by Qatar, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait is increasing diplomatic pressure on Iran over its control measures in the Strait of Hormuz. Retired US General Mark Kimmitt says the move is aimed at highlighting the global consequences of disruptions in the strategic waterway, particularly for developing countries dependent on fuel and fertilizer supplies. While Kimmitt doubts the resolution would pass without facing vetoes from permanent Security Council members, he says the debate itself could isolate Iran diplomatically and demonstrate limited international support for its actions. He suggested China’s position may depend on the timing of any vote relative to President Donald Trump’s upcoming visit to Beijing, while arguing Russia could benefit economically from higher oil prices caused by disruptions in Hormuz. Meanwhile, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is facing scrutiny after requesting an additional $1.5 trillion defense budget, describing it as a “warfighting budget” designed to restore America’s military readiness. Kimmitt defended the proposal, saying the Pentagon’s primary mission remains preparing for war in order to deter future conflicts. On the cost of the conflict, Kimmitt dismissed estimates ranging from $29 billion to $1 trillion as politically driven, though he acknowledged the war would remain extremely expensive due to the use of precision weaponry. Asked about prospects for de-escalation, Kimmitt expressed pessimism despite ongoing diplomatic efforts, saying he fears the conflict could return to open warfare.
