In this project, Michael’s goal is not to build a cabin that rises above the trees, but a warm, hidden dugout buried beneath the forest floor, concealed under the remains of an old stump. What looks from the outside like a natural piece of woodland decay slowly becomes something far more surprising: a secret underground shelter shaped by hand, earth, clay, bark, moss, fire, and instinct. As you’ll see, this is bushcraft at its most immersive. Michael digs into the ground, carves the interior, builds a ladder, forms a clay hearth, creates a smoke outlet disguised as part of the stump, lays a straw bed, covers the roof with logs and moss, and hides the entrance so carefully that the shelter begins to blend back into the forest. Suddenly, the old stump becomes camouflage. And when night falls, the small hidden room glows with firelight, turning a hole in the ground into a warm survival refuge.
